In type II diabetes, the cells of the target tissue become insensitive to insulin. In response to such a condition, the body starts producing more amount of insulin. One of the most common results of high insulin levels in the blood is hyperinsulinemia. Hyperinsulinemia results in a reduction in the mass of functional β pancreatic cells.
