Textbook Problem

In the electrolysis of HNO3(aq), hydrogen is produced at the cathode. According to a table of reduction potentials, NO3(aq) is easier to reduce than H+(aq). Suggest a possible reason why H2 formed rather than NO. What is the product formed at the anode? Write an equation for the anode reaction.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To product formed at the anode and the equation at anode during the electrolysis of HNO3 has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Electrolysis:

It is a decomposition of ionic compounds by passing electricity through molten compounds or aqueous solutions of compounds.

Electricity used to produce chemical changes. The apparatus used for electrolysis is called an electrolytic cell.

Explanation

Electrolysis of aqueous HNO3

Reduction potentials are not related to the thermodynamic parameter. However , it does not tell us about the kinetics of the reaction.

Generally reduction potential are more thermodynamically favourable to reduce NO3. The reduction of H2O might at a much faster rate, preventing considerable formation of NO.

The aqueous HNO3 solution is acidic, the half cell reaction that occurs at the anode cannot involve OH-
