Chapter 23, Problem 2TE

What is another biological use for carbohydrates besides energy?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The use of carbohydrates other than energy.

Answer to Problem 2TE

The carbohydrates act as the constituents of biomolecules like RNA and DNA. The two aldopentose sugars that are D-ribose and 2- deoxy-D-ribose are present in RNA and DNA respectively.

Explanation of Solution

The use of carbohydrates in living system other than energy is that it is used as constituents of biomolecules. There are two essential components of RNA and DNA. These components are the two aldopentoses that is D-ribose and 2- deoxy-D-ribose which are present in RNA and DNA respectively. These nuclei acids essentially control the transmission of hereditary effects from one generation to the other and also the biosynthesis of proteins. Carbohydrates are also found in biosystem in combination with many proteins and lipids.

Conclusion:

There are many used of carbohydrates one of those is that it is used as the constituents of biomolecules like RNA and DNA. The two aldopentose sugars that are D-ribose and 2- deoxy-D-ribose are present in RNA and DNA respectively.
