Answer to Problem 4RAT

The correct option for the statement “Which of the following is not a function of fat within the body?” is option (c).

Explanation of Solution

Lipids or fats are compound of biological origin that dissolves in nonpolar solvent such as chloroform and ethanol. They act as the protective cushion which provides support in the prevention of injury to important organs of the body like heart, liver and kidneys. It also insulates the parts of the body from heat changes and other various temperature changes.

The biomolecule which covers the major part of the food is carbohydrate. Therefore, the carbohydrate provides energy for the functioning of living system and thus acts as a biofuel. In the living system, the polysaccharides such as starch and glycogen are first hydrolysed by enzymes to glucose.

The chemical reaction that takes place in human body is shown below.

C6H12O6+6O26CO2+6H2O+2880kJ

Thus, the source of glucose is carbohydrates.

Hence, the statement which is not a function of fat is (c).

Conclusion:

The good source of glucose for the body is carbohydrates. It is not a function of fat. Lipid or fat protects the body from temperature changes and also acts as a protective cushion for the body.
