Concept introduction:
In each chair conformation of cyclohexane, one hydrogen atom on each carbon is in an axial position- perpendicular to the plane, and one is in an equatorial position- parallel and pointing outward from the center of the ring. In a chair conformation, six H atoms are at axial positions and six at equatorial position.
