Question
Chapter 4, Problem 4.40P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
From the given isomer, the isomer with greater equilibrium percentage of molecules with the alkyl group in the axial position, isopropylcyclohexane or porpylcyclohexane, is to be determined and explained.
Concept introduction:
A major contribution to the strain in gauche interactions comes specifically from repulsion between the electrons on the axial group bonded to C1 and those on the axial H atoms at positions C3 and C5. There are two of these 1, 3-diaxial interactions.

Discuss and compare two possible chair conformations of cis-1,3-dibromocyclohexane compound. Which conformation is more stable? Why? Explain the reason clearly.
Is there a difference in the stability of the two cyclohexane conformations?
Interconversion of the staggered and eclipsed conformations of alkanes
requires rotation around a -C bond such as the one depicted below (see arrow).
Using your knowledge of bonding, explain why these rotations do not significantly
affect the energy (strength) of these bonds. You may find it helpful to describe the
type of bond being rotated.
