Chapter 17, Problem 16CONQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The miR-200 family act as tumor-suppressor genes and the consequence when their expression is inhibited.

Introduction:

The miR-200 family involves a group of several different miRNAs (microRNAs). The miRNAs are non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) which can give rise to many types of cancer if expressed abnormally. The miRNA genes can act as oncogenes and the overexpression of these genes can cause cancer. However, the miR-200 family plays a key role in tumor suppression in the body.

p53 is an activator of a miRNA called miR-145. miR-145 targets c-myc, a gene that promotes cellular proliferation and survival. If p53 undergoes a loss of functionmutation, what would be the overall result?   Question 5 options:   Increased proliferation and survival.   Decreased proliferation and survival.
What is the difference between an oncogene and a tumor-suppressorgene? Give two examples of each type of gene.
In response to potentially toxic substances (e.g., high levels of iron), eukaryotic cells often use translational or posttranslational regulatory mechanisms to prevent cell death, rather than using transcriptional regulatory mechanisms. Explain why.
