Textbook Problem

Why is the number of neutrons greater than the number of protons in stable nuclei having A greater than about 40, and why is this effect more pronounced for the heaviest nuclei?

To determine

The reason for number of neutrons being greater than the number of protons and the reason it is more pronounced for the heaviest nuclei.

Explanation

Explanation:

Usually, there will be an addition in nucleus of new nucleons in the mass number of iron.

These new nucleons will be at a very far distance from other nucleons to have some nuclear attraction.

Though the protons which are added will have some repulsion force from other protons, the Coulomb force will be of very high range.

The repulsive force of Coulomb continuously increases for nucleus which is heavier, but the force of nuclear attraction will be the same and thus the ratio for BE (binding energy) and A (nucleon), as BE / A will be smaller.

Thus, nucleus which is stable heavier than

That is why stable nuclei heavier than A  40 will contain a greater number of neutrons than the total number of protons wherein Coulomb repulsive force is reduced by maintaining a greater number of neutrons so that the protons will remain apart at more distance
