An experiment was conducted for better understanding of the effectiveness of a particular type of drug for reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) level. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether different dosages used have significant different outcomes in average LDL reduction. Twenty subjects with LDL at around 250 to 300 mg/dL had participated in the study and were randomly divided into four groups. Each group was given a specific level of dosage of the drug each day for one month, with a control group that only provided with placebo. The reduction in LDL was recorded and showed in the following table. Positive number indicates reduction and negative numbers indicates increasing in DLD. Tardigrades, or water bears, are a type of micro-animal famous for their resilience. In examining the effects of radiation on organisms, an expert claimed that the amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony of tardigrades no longer has a mean of
1350
Gy
(grays). (For comparison, humans cannot withstand more than
10
Gy
.) A study was conducted on a sample of
18
randomly selected tardigrade colonies, finding that the amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony had a sample mean of
1375
Gy
, with a sample standard deviation of
75
Gy
. Assume that the population of amounts of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony of tardigrades is approximately normally distributed.
Complete the parts below to perform a hypothesis test to see if there is enough evidence, at the
0.05
level of significance, to support the claim that
μ
, the mean amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony of tardigrades, is not equal to
1350
Gy
.

- The results of a multicenter clinical trial to determine the safety and efficacy of the pancreatic lipase inhibitor, Xenical, was reported (Ingersoll, 1997). Xenical is used to block the absorption of dietary fat. The article reported that more than 4000 patients in the U.S. and Europe were randomized to receive Xenical or a placebo in a parallel groups study. After one year, 57% of those receiving Xenical had lost at least 5% of their body weight, as opposed to 31% of those receiving a placebo. Assume that exactly 4000 patients were in the study, and that 2000 were randomized to receive a placebo and 2000 received Xenical. Please Compute a 95% confidence interval for the “relative risk” of losing at least 5% of body weight for those receiving Xenical relative to those receiving placebo. Can the drug be considered effective?arrow_forwardA study measuring the fatigue of air traffic controllers resulted in proposals for modficiation and redesign of the controllers' workstation. After consideration of several designs for the workstation, three specific alternatives are selected as having the best potential for reducing controller stress. The key question is: To what extent do the three alternatives differ in terms of their effect on controller stress? A randomized block design is used to test the hypothesis of no difference in stress levels for the three workstation alternatives. The data for the experiment is located in the Microsoft Excel Online file below. Of 58 patients receiving C4A-rich plasma, the average length of hospital stay was 8.5 days and the standard deviation was 1.9 days. Of 58 patients receiving C4A-free plasma, the average length of hospital stay was 11.9 days and the standard deviation was 3.6 days. Can you conclude that the mean hospital stay is shorter for patients receiving C4A-rich plasma?arrow_forward
- A study was performed among patients with progressive chronic kidney disease to assess the optimal time for the initiation of dialysis (Cooper et al. [22]). Patients were randomized to eitheri. an early start group, where dialysis was initiated when their estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was between 10.0 and 15.0 mL per minute per 1.73 m2 of body surface area orii. a late start group, where dialysis was initiated when their GFR was 5.0 to 7.0 mL per minute per 1.73 m2 of body surface area. The primary outcome was total mortality. There were 404 patients assigned to the early start group, of whom 152 died. As per the authors: “Each year, rotavirus gastroenteritis is responsible for about 37% of deaths from diarrhea among children younger than 5 years of age worldwide, with a disproportionate effect in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Niger to evaluate the efficacy of a live, oral bovine rotavirus pentavalent vaccine (BRV-PV, Serum Institute of India) to prevent severe rotavirus gastroenteritis. Healthy infants received three doses of the vaccine or placebo at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age. Episodes of rotavirus gastroenteritis were assessed through active and passive surveillance.” The following Kaplan-Meier curves show the time to a diagnosis of rotavirus gastroenteritis separately for the vaccine and placebo samples.
