Textbook Problem

For each of the following insoluble salts, (1) write a balanced equation showing the equilibrium occurring when the salt is added to water, and (2) write the Ksp expression.

(a) PbSO4

(b) BaF2

(c) Ag3PO4

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The balanced chemical equation at the equilibrium condition, attained, when the given salt PbSO4 added to the water has to be written; and also Ksp expression has to be written.

Concept introduction:

Balanced chemical equation: When a salt is added to water it dissociates into its constituent ions in water and an equilibrium is attained between the undissolved salt and dissolved ions.

For example when a salt AxBy is dissolved in water following equilibrium exist and the balanced chemical equation can be written as follows,

  AxBy(s)xAy+(aq)+yBx(aq)

Here,

  • x is the coefficient of cation A+y
  • y is the coefficient of anion Bx

Solubility product constant Ksp : It is an equilibrium constant and is defined as the product of the equilibrium concentration of the ions of the salt raised to the power of their coefficients in the balanced chemical equation.

The expression for Ksp of a salt is given as,

AxBy(s)xAy+(aq)+yBx(aq)Ksp=[Ay+]x[Bx]y

Explanation

Balanced equation: When PbSO4 is dissolved in water it dissociates into its constituent ions, Pb2+ and SO42. PbSO4 is slightly soluble in water and therefore when dissolved in water an equilibrium is attained between undissolved solid PbSO4 and dissolved ions Pb2+,SO42.

The balanced chemical equation for PbSO4 in water is given as,

  PbSO4(s)Pb2+(aq)+SO42(aq)

  • Solubility product constant Ksp

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The balanced chemical equation at the equilibrium condition, attained, when the given salt BaF2 added to the water has to be written; and also Ksp expression has to be written.
