Chapter 21, Problem 21.17P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The product obtained in the reaction of given esters with 18O isotope Na+O 18H is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

An ester is a derivative of carboxylic acid which is obtained by replacing the OH group with OR group, where R is any hydrocarbon chain. It is represented by the formula RCOOR. An ester is formed by the reaction of carboxylic with alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. This reaction is known as Fischer Esterification.

annotated these structures with, which compound would most likely behave as the Lewis acid (electrophile) for this reaction? A methyl amine (CH3NH₂) B ethyl bromide (CH3CH₂Br)
Show how acid derivatives hydrolyze to carboxylic acids under either acidic or basicconditions. Explain why some acid derivatives (amides, for example) require muchstronger conditions for hydrolysis than other derivatives.
Many multi-step organic reaction mechanisms involve proton transfer steps. For example, the first step of Fischer esterification of carboxylic acids(as shown with acedic acid) is activation of the acid by protonation. Based on your understanding of which reaction pathway is more favorable, explain why using chemical structures.
