Textbook Problem

A protozoan (single-celled animal) that normally lives in the ocean is placed in freshwater. Will it shrivel or burst? Explain briefly.

Interpretation Introduction

It should be explained that what will happen when a protozoan is placed in fresh water. Protozoans are normally lives in ocean.

Concept introduction:

  • Equilibrium: It is a state in which the rates of forward and backward reactions are the same.
  • Osmosis: The flow of solvent molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration.
  • Semipermeable membrane: It is one type of membrane which containing a network of microscopic holes or pores that permits the flow of small solvent molecules but restricts the flow of larger solute molecule.

When protozoans placed in water instead of sea water it will burst.

Because in the ocean the salt concentration is high and to, maintains equilibrium water will always move from high concentration area to the low concentration area and this keep the organism in equilibrium with its environment...
