Concept Introduction:

In an atom, electrons are placed in different energy levels which are called as principal energy levels. In these energy levels; electrons fill according to energy of the energy levels. The filling of these energy levels with electrons is called as electronic configuration.

Explanation

The Aufbau principle states that in the ground state of an atom electron fills lowest energy atomic orbitals then only occupying higher levels. The energy of 5s level is less than 4d therefore electrons first fill in 5s level.

The order of energy levels for an element is as given below:

1s< 2s < 2p< 3s< 3p< 4s < 3d<4p<5s< 4d

Hence, 5s orbital has lesser energy than 4d therefore electrons first fill in 5s than only move to 4d. That is the reason; in Rb and Sr, the valence electrons fill in 4s...
