The “firefly” analogy used to illustrate how the wave mechanical model for atom differs from Bohr model should be explained.

Concept Introduction:

In wave mechanical model, an orbital represents a region of space in which there is a high probability of finding the electron.

To explain the idea of an orbital fire fly analogy can be used. A male firefly is released in a room in which an open vial of female sex attractant hormone is suspended in the center of the room. The room is dark and a camera is kept in one corner. Every time the firefly flashes the camera records the firefly’s position in the room at that moment. Then the film is taken out and developed.

Explanation

The firefly analogy demonstrates the concept of a probability map for electron density. In the wave mechanical model of the atom, we cannot predict specifically where the electron is in the atom; we can say only where there is a high probability of finding the electron. As in firefly analogy, we cannot precisely predict the path of the firefly in the room...
