Concept Introduction:
For molecules that have lone pairs around central atom, lone pairs influence shape, because there are no atoms at the positions occupied by these lone pairs. The key rule that governs the molecular shape, in this case, is the extent of lone pair–lone pair repulsions are far greater than lone bond pair or bond pair-bond pair repulsions. The table that summarized the molecular shapes possible for various combinations of bonded and lone pairs are given as follows:

- Nitrosyl azide, N4O, is a pale yellow solid first synthesized in 1993. Write the Lewis structure for nitrosyl azide.arrow_forwardWrite the Lewis structures for the following species, and indicate whether each is an odd-electron species, an electron-deficient species, or an expanded valence shell species. (a) BI3 (b) IF5 (c) HN2arrow_forwardSeveral Lewis structures can be written for perbromate ion, , the central Br with all single Br—O bonds, or with one, two, or three Br=O double bonds. Draw the Lewis structures of these possible resonance structures, and use formal charges to predict which makes the greatest contribution to the resonance hybrid.arrow_forward
- Using the bond dissociation enthalpies in Table 8.8, estimate the enthalpy of combustion of gaseous methane, CH4, to give water vapor and carbon dioxide gas.arrow_forwardWrite reasonable Lewis structures for the following species, none of which follow the octet rule. (a) BF3 (b) NO (c) CO+ (d) ClO3arrow_forwardWhat is the formal charge on the central chlorine atom in the molecular ion [ClO4]- ? Assume that all of the Cl-O bonds are single bonds.arrow_forward
- provide the following information including the lewis structure and the 3d sketch for SeF4 and BrF5arrow_forwardIn aqueous hydrogen fluoride solution, an importantspecies is the ion HF2, which has the bonding arrangementFHF. Draw the Lewis structure for this ion, and explain how itarises.arrow_forwardAluminum oxide (Al₂ O₃) is a widely used industrial abrasive(emery, corundum), for which the specific application depends onthe hardness of the crystal. What does this hardness imply about the magnitude of the lattice energy? Would you have predictedfrom the chemical formula that Al₂ O₃ is hard? Explain.arrow_forward
- Draw Lewis structures for these ions and show which atom in each bears the formal charge. Q.)
