Concept Introduction:
VSEPR model is useful tool to determine shapes as well as properties such as polarity of molecules.
The extent of polarity is quantitatively expressed as dipole moment. It is defined as product of charges of two bonded atoms and the separation between them. The electronegativity difference decides the direction of dipole moment. It is indicated by an arrow head from positive end towards negative end.
For complex molecules, the shape must be determined prior to determination of individual dipoles. Thus shape is governed by the VSEPR model.

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight
- Consider the following molecules: SiH4, PH3, H2S. In each case, a central atom is surrounded by four electron pairs. In which of these molecules would you expect the bond angle to be less than 109.5? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardFollowing are the structures of three isomers of difluorobenzene, C6H4F2. Are any of them nonpolar?arrow_forwardThe cations O2+ and N2+ are formed when molecules of O2 and N2 are subjected to intense, high-energy solar radiation in Earths upper atmosphere. Write the electron configuration for O2+. Predict its bond order and magnetic behavior.arrow_forward
- Indicate which molecules are polar and which are nonpolar. (a) SeO2 (b) N2O (N is the central atom) (c) SCl4arrow_forwardIdentify the orbitals on each of the atoms that form the bonds in H3CCN. How many bonds and bonds form?arrow_forwardIdentify the type of hybridization, approximate bond angles for the N, C, and O atoms, and shortest carbon-to-oxygen bond length in alanine, an amino acid, whose Lewis structure isarrow_forward
- Formamide, HC(O)NH2, is prepared at high pressures from carbon monoxide and ammonia, and serves as an industrial solvent (the parentheses around the O indicate that it is bonded only to the carbon atom and that the carbon atom is also bonded to the H and the N atoms). Two resonance forms (one with formal charges) can be written for formamide. Write both resonance structures, and predict the bond angles about the carbon and nitrogen atoms for each resonance form. Are they the same? Describe how the experimental determination of the HNH bond angle could be used to indicate which resonance form is more important.arrow_forwardHow many "central" atoms are part of ethylene glycol, a component of antifreeze? What are teh molecular geometries of each central atom? Is the molecule polar or non-polar? Why?arrow_forwardThe molecule shown here is difluoromethane 1CH2F22, which isused as a refrigerant called R-32. (a) Based on the structure, howmany electron domains surround the C atom in this molecule?(b) Would the molecule have a nonzero dipole moment? (c) Ifthe molecule is polar, which of the following describes the directionof the overall dipole moment vector in the molecule:(i) from the carbon atom toward a fluorine atom, (ii) from thecarbon atom to a point midway between the fluorine atoms,(iii) from the carbon atom to a point midway between the hydrogenatoms, or (iv) from the carbon atom toward a hydrogenatom?
