The valid Lewis structure of
Concept Introduction:
Lewis structures represent covalent bonds and describe valence electrons configuration of atoms. The covalent bonds are depicted by lines and unshared electron pairs by pairs of dots.
(b)
Interpretation:
Whether any possible resonance structure can be drawn for hexasulfur has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
When a single Lewis structure cannot describe all the experimentally observed properties of a molecule more than one Lewis structure that differs only in the position of multiple bonds is drawn. These are termed resonance structures. The actual molecule is represented by the hybrid of each of these resonance structures.

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight
- Given the bonds C N, C H, C Br, and S O, (a) which atom in each is the more electronegative? (b) which of these bonds is the most polar?arrow_forwardThe C¬O bond length in carbon monoxide, CO, is 1.13 Å, whereas the C¬Obond length in CO2 is 1.24 Å. Without drawing a Lewis structure, do you think thatCO contains a single, double, or triple bond?arrow_forwardWhat is the formal charge on each atom in HNO3 and the Lewis structure for it?arrow_forward
- Below are two different Lewis structures for nitrous acid (HNO2). Which is the better Lewis structure based only on formal charge?arrow_forwardWrite the Lewis structures for CH2N2, including all resonance forms, and show formal charges.arrow_forwardDraw the Lewis structure for the nitrate ion, NO3-, with formal charges on each atom and resonance structures.arrow_forward
- Nitrosyl azide, N4O, is a pale yellow solid first synthesized in 1993. Write the Lewis structure for nitrosyl azide.arrow_forwardBased on the concept of formal charge, what is the central atom in (a) HCN (do not include H as a possibility)? b) NOCI (Cl is always a terminal atom)?arrow_forwardDefine formal charge and explain how to calculate it. What is the purpose of the formal charge? Organic compounds are composed mostly of carbon and hydrogen but also may have oxygen, nitrogen, and/or halogens in the formula. Formal charge arguments work very well for organic compounds when drawing the best Lewis structure. How do C, H, N, O, and Cl satisfy the octet rule in organic compounds so as to have a formula charge of zero?arrow_forward
