Concept Introduction:
VSEPR model is useful tool to determine shapes as well as properties such as polarity of molecules.
The extent of polarity is quantitatively expressed as dipole moment. It is defined as product of charges of two bonded atoms and the separation between them. The electronegativity difference decides the direction of dipole moment. It is indicated by an arrow head from positive end towards negative end.
For complex molecules, the shape must be determined prior to determination of individual dipoles. Thus shape is governed by the VSEPR model.

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight
- Draw the 3D structure of the following molecules/ions, specifying the boundary forms of resonance and the resonance hybrid if applicable. Indicate whether the molecule (or ion) is polar or not. d) XeSI4arrow_forwardWrite the Lewis structure for nitric acid in which the three O atoms are bonded to the central N atom and the ionizable H atom is bonded to one of the O atom.arrow_forwardDetermine the number of valence electrons in sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and then draw the corresponding Lewis structure (with minimized formal charges).arrow_forward
- Chemical species are said to be isoelectronic if they have the same Lewis structure (regardless of charge). Consider these ions and write a Lewis structure for a neutral molecule that is isoelectronic with them. (a) CN–, (b) NH4+ (c) CO3 2–arrow_forwardConsider a hypothetical molecule with the formula X4Y2Z. The atoms X, Y, and Z have electronegativities of 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5, respectively. The molecule adopts a tetrahedral geometry with X atoms at the corners, Y atoms in the middle of the edges, and Z atoms at the center of the molecule. Explain the polarity of this molecule and the factors contributing to it.arrow_forwardDraw the Lewis structure of SOF4 (with minimized formal charges) and then determine if the molecule is polar or non polararrow_forward
- An oxide of nitrogen is 25.9% N by mass, has a molar mass of 108 g/mol, and contains no nitrogen-nitrogen or oxygenoxygen bonds. Draw its Lewis structure, and name it.arrow_forwardDraw the Lewis structure of SOCl₄ (with minimized formal charges) and then determine if the molecule is polar or nonpolar.arrow_forwardHow many non-bonding electrons are on the central atom in the optimized Lewis structure of PO4 3- in which the formula charges are minimized?arrow_forward
- Write a Lewis structure for the amide ion, NH2─, and assign formal charges to each atom.arrow_forwardSulfuric acid is the industrial chemical produced in greatest quantity worldwide. About 90 billion pounds are produced each year in the United States alone. Write the Lewis structure for sulfuric acid, H2SO4, which has twooxygen atoms and two OH groups bonded to the sulfur.arrow_forwardSelenium tetrafluoride, SeF₄, is a colorless liquid that is used as a fluorinating reagent in organic synthesis.
