Chapter 8, Problem 75GQ
The cyanate ion, OCN−, has the least electronegative atom, C, in the center. The unstable fulminate ion, CNO−, has the same molecular formula, but the N atom is in the center.
- (a) Draw the three possible resonance structures of CNO−.
- (b) On the basis of formal charges, decide on the resonance structure with the most reasonable distribution of charge
- (c) Mercury fulminate is so unstable it is used in blasting caps for dynamite. Can you offer an explanation for this instability? (Hint: Are the formal charges in any resonance structure reasonable in view of the relative electronegativities of the atoms?)

Students have asked these similar questions
Write a Lewis structure for the amide ion, NH2─, and assign formal charges to each atom.
For the carbonate ion (CO32-), there are 3 resonance structures. For any given structure what would the formal charge be for an oxygen that has a single bond to the central carbon atom?
In N2O, nitrogen is the central atom and the oxygen atom is terminal. In OF2, however, oxygen is the central atom. Use formal charges to explain why.
