Chapter 9, Problem 9.65P

Methane is burned completely with 40% excess air. The methane enters the combustion chamber at 25°C, the combustion air enters at 150°C. and the stack gas [CO2, H2O(v), O2, N2] exits at 450°C. The chamber functions as a preheater for an air stream flowing in a pipe through the chamber to a spray dryer. The air enters the chamber at 25°C at a rate of 1.57 × 104m3(STP)/h and is heated to 181°C. All of the heat generated by combustion is used to heat the combustion products and the air going to the spray dryer (i.e., the combustion chamber may be considered adiabatic).

  1. Draw and completely label the process flow' diagram and perform a degree-of-freedom analysis.

  • Calculate the required molar flow rates of methane and combustion air (kmol/h) and the volumetric flow rates (m3/h) of the two effluent streams. State all assumptions you make.
  • When the system goes on line for the first time, environmental monitoring of the stack gas reveals a considerable quantity of CO, suggesting a problem with either the design or the operation of the combustion chamber. What changes from your calculated values would you expect to see in the temperatures and volumetric flow rates of the effluent streams [increase, decrease, cannot tell without doing the calculations]?

    1. A wet gas from a field in Iran is processed through two stages of separation; first stage separator operates at 220 psia and 71°F, while the stock tank operates at atmospheric pressure and 69°F. The separator gas condensate ratio is 41,000 scf/STB and the stock tank gas condensate ratio is 450 scf/STB. The molecular weights of the separator gas and stock tank gas are 25.0 and 35.0 lb/lb-mol, respectively. The stock tank condensate gravity is 0.85 and its molecular weight is 125 lb/lb-mol. Let us calculate the specific gravity of the reservoir gas in a step-wise manner, by considering quantities for one STB of condensate. Note that 1.0 bbl is 5.614 ft. To evaluate the use of renewable resources, an experiment was carried out with rice hulls. After pyrolysis, the product gas analyzed 6.4% CO2, 0.1% O2, 39% CO, 51.8% H2, 0.6% CH4, and 2.1% N2. It entered a combustion chamber at 90 °F and a pressure of 35.0 in. Hg and was burned with 40% excess air (dry) at 70 °F and an atmospheric pressure of 29.4 in. Hg; 10% of the CO remains. a. How many cubic feet of air were supplied per cubic foot of entering gas? b. How many cubic feet of product gas were produced per cubic foot of entering gas if the exit gas was at 29.4 in. Hg and 400 °F?
The boiler in an apartment building uses propane (C3H8) to heat water that circulates throughout the building as steam. 1.00 m'/s of propane gas at 25°C and 1 atm is combusted with 10% excess air at 25°C and 1 atm. After all of the propane is combusted, the product gas contains a 10.0:1 molar ratio of CO2 to CO and leaves the boiler at 25°C. Heat from the boiler is transferred to a pure water stream at 50°C and 1.0 bar, which is converted into saturated steam at 20 bar, with no heat lost to the surroundings in the process.
