The Arrhenius theory is first introduced in 1887 by Svante Arrhenius who is a Swedish scientist. According to him, a substance that dissociates into ions in the water and one of the ions is hydrogen ion H+ is acidic in nature and if one of the ions is hydroxide ion OH, the substance is basic in nature.

Explanation

According to Arrhenius theory, acids produce hydrogen ion in the aqueous solution. The reaction is represented as follows:

Here, HA is an acid that dissociates into H+ and A ions.

An acid can be strong or weak depending on the extent of its dissociation. Weak acids do not dissociate completely into hydrogen ion and conjugate base for example acetic acid
