. Which component of a buffered solution is capable of combining with an added strong acid? Using your example from Exercise 60, show how this component would react with added HC1.
Interpretation:
The component of a buffered solution that can combine with an added strong acid should be identified.
Concept Introduction:
There can be two main kinds of buffer systems depending on the pH values that one needs to achieve in preparation of the buffer solutions. The two main kinds are acidic and basic buffer solutions. In both these kinds of buffer solutions there are two main constituents.
In an acidic buffer a weak acid and its conjugate base are the two main components in the buffer system. An example of such an acidic buffer system is the acetic buffer system. Acetic buffer contains acetic acid (CH3 COOH) as the weak acid and acetate ions (of the form of sodium acetate, CH3 COONa) as the conjugate base (with respect to acetic acid) of the buffer system.
According to equation (2) the amount of HCl added reacts with acetate ions to produce acetic acid and chloride ions. The salt would provide enough acetate ions (CH3 COO- ) to react with HCl (remember that small amount would be added) hence it is clear that addition of HCl won’t change the amount of H+ in the medium...
