The energy released upon the complete degradation of 1 g carbohydrate and 1g lipid in the body has to be compared.
Concept introduction:
Carbohydrates and fatty acids, both are major sources of fuels. However, fatty acids yield approximately 2.5 times as much energy per gram as carbohydrates (glucose). Fatty acids are comparatively much better than glucose as energy storing molecules. In the body, some organs prefer to use glucose as a source of energy while functioning while some prefer fatty acids. There are also certain organs which prefer both.
