Question
Chapter 25, Problem 25.60EP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The net ATP produced from 1 molecule of glucose and 1 molecule of hexanoic acid upon complete degradation in the body has to be determined.
Concept introduction:
Glucose and fatty acids, both are major sources of fuels. However, fatty acids yields approximately 2.5 times as much energy per gram as carbohydrates (glucose). Fatty acids are comparatively much better than glucose as energy storing molecules. In the body, some organs prefer to use glucose as a source of energy while functioning while some prefer fatty acids. There are also certain organs which prefer both. ATP molecules are energy providing molecules ATP provides energy when it is broken down into ADP and inorganic phosphate

ATP / Unitarrow_forwardIn hepatocytes, the enzyme glucokinase catalyzes the ATP-coupled phosphorylation of glucose. Glucokinase binds both ATP and glucose, forming a glucose-ATP-enzyme complex. The enzyme then transfers the phosphoryl group directly from ATP to glucose. Select the advantages of phosphoryl group transfer compared to hydrolysis and subsequent phosphorylation? ATP hydrolysis is thermodynamically unfavorable compared to group transfer. Glucokinase increases the transition state energy, favoring glucose phosphorylation. The process takes advantage of the high phosphoryl group transfer potential of ATP. Reaction intermediates do not need to be present in excess.
