Textbook Problem

Draw the Lewis structure for acetamide, CH3CONH2. What are the electron-pair geometry and molecular geometry around the two C atoms? What is the hybridization of each of the C atoms? What orbitals overlap to form the σ and π bonds between carbon and oxygen?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The Lewis structure for acetamide (CH3CO-NH2) has to be drawn. The electron-pair and molecular geometries around the central atom should be determined. The hybridization of each carbon atoms and the orbitals overlap to form the σ and Π bonds between carbon and oxygen have to be find out.

Concept Introduction:

  • Lewis structures are diagrams that represent the chemical bonding of covalently bonded molecules and coordination compounds.
  • It is also known as Lewis dot structures which represent the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule.
  • The Lewis structure is based on the concept of the octet rule so that the electrons shared in each atom should have 8 electrons in its outer shell.
  • Hybridization is the mixing of valence atomic orbitals to get equivalent hybridized orbitals that having similar characteristics and energy.
  • Geometry of a molecule can be predicted by knowing its hybridization.
  • sp3  hybrid orbitals is produced by hybridization of single s-orbital and three p-orbital.
  • sp2  hybrid orbitals is produced by hybridization between one s-orbital and two p-orbitals.
  • sp  hybrid orbitals is produced by hybridization of single s-orbital and single p-orbital.

Electron geometry is the shape of a molecule predicted by considering both bond electron pairs and lone pair of electrons.

Molecular geometry is the shape of a molecule predicted by considering only bond pair of electrons.

Sigma (σ) bonds are the bonds in which shared hybrid orbital’s electron density are concentrated along the internuclear axis.

Pi (π) bonds are the bonds in which shared unhybridized orbital’s (p, d ...) electron density are concentrated in above and below of the plane of the molecule.

Explanation

Lewis structure of acetamide can be drawn as follows,

Three different groups were attached and oriented in a trigonal planar geometry to the central carbon atom and so this carbon atom is sp2 hybridized.

Due to the presence of four electron pairs the carbon atom in CH3 is sp3 hybridized.

The central carbon atom in the molecule is sp2 hybridized
