NOUN: A ringlike coral island and reef that nearly or entirely encloses a lagoon.
ETYMOLOGY:Maldivean atolu; akin to probably akin to Sinhalese ätul, interior (from the interior lagoon), probably from Sanskrit *antala-, interior, variant of antara-. See en in Appendix I.
