NOUN: A shantytown or slum, especially in Brazil.
ETYMOLOGY:Portuguese, possibly from diminutive of favo, honeycomb (from Latin favus) or from favelas (probably from pl. of favela, spurge, from fava, bean, from Latin faba; see bha-bh- in Appendix I).
