ETYMOLOGY:French, from Portuguese bonzo, from Japanese bons : bon, ordinary (from Middle Chinese buan, fhan) + s, monk (from Middle Chinese sng, from Sanskrit sagha, collection, brotherhood of monks, from sahanti, sagha-, to put together ( sam, together; see sem-1 in Appendix I + hanti, he strikes; see gwhen- in Appendix I).
