§ 5. aerate


The pronunciation (âr´-t´´), which may raise a few eyebrows in some circles, is an example of intrusion, a phonological process that involves the addition or insertion of an extra sound for no obvious reason. The usual pronunciation of aerate has only two syllables, (âr´t´´).    1
