| 18741954, American mathematician, b. Independence, Iowa, grad. Univ. of Texas, 1893. He studied in Leipzig and Paris and joined the staff of the Univ. of Chicago in 1900. A leading American algebraist, he wrote on invariants and the theory of finite and infinite groups. His chief work is A History of the Theory of Numbers (3 vol., 191923, repr. 1966). |
