(är´nlt hou´brä´´kn) (KEY) , 1660–1719, Dutch painter, etcher, and author of The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters (3 vol., 1718–21), containing important biographies. His son Jacobus Houbraken, 1698–1780, a well-known engraver, worked chiefly in Amsterdam, executing over 500 portraits and book illustrations including those for his father’s volumes.
