(l´j lt-tsät´t) (KEY) , 1841–1927, Italian political leader and economist. As minister of finance in several cabinets and as premier (1910–11) he promoted liberal legislation and was noted especially for his advocacy of peoples’ banks and minority rights. He also secured 24 commercial treaties, one of which (1898) ended the Franco-Italian tariff struggle.
