Murray, John, 2d earl and 1st marquess of Atholl

1635?–1703, Scottish nobleman. After the Restoration he held high offices in Scotland and was created marquess in 1676. He lost royal favor temporarily when he urged (1678) moderation in the measures against the Covenanters but fought vigorously against Archibald Campbell, 8th earl of Argyll in 1685. He was lukewarm to the accession (1688) of William III and allowed his troops to be used at Killiecrankie against the supporters of the new king.
