Varnhagen von Ense, Karl August
(kärl ou´gst färn´hägn fn n´z) (KEY) , 17851858, German poet, historian, and journalist. He collaborated with Chamisso and other writers and wrote Biographische Denkmaler [biographical monuments] (5 vol., 182430). The Berlin salon of his wife, Rahel Antoine Friederike Levin Varnhagen von Ense (17711833), was frequented by leading romantics, among them Heine, Gutzkow, and Laube.
