| ATTRIBUTION: | Charles Wilson (1890–1961), U.S. industrialist, Secretary of Defense. usual version of statement by Wilson, head of General Motors Corporation, 1941-1953, to a U.S. Senate committee, Jan. 1953.
The statement as reported by the New York Times (Feb. 24, 1953) was, “For years I thought what was good for our country was good for General Motors and vice versa. The difference did not exist. Our company is too big. It goes with the welfare of the country.” The Democrats on the committee, who were in a majority, focused on the “vice versa” of Wilson’s statement, to question his true loyalties. |
