| Floyd Bennett Field, park, SE N.Y., in SE Brooklyn borough of N.Y. city, on heavily polluted Jamaica Bay; 40°35'N 73°59'W. U.S. Coast Guard air station and U.S. Naval Reserve center. Formerly N.Y. citys 1st municipal airport. Named after flyer who 1st piloted Admiral Richard Byrd across North Pole in 1926. Part of the Gateway Natl. Recreation Area, 1,430 acres/579 ha of the park has been run by Natl. Park Service since 1972. |
