PRONUNCIATION:  lgs, lägs
The largest city of Nigeria, in the southwest part of the country on the Gulf of Guinea. An old Yoruba town, it served as the capital of Nigeria from independence in 1960 until 1991, when the capital was officially moved to Abuja. Lagos remains the economic and commercial center of the country. Population: 1,404,000.
